We hear you have some varied interests that people wouldn’t normally think go together. Can you tell us about these?
I have been doing music pretty much my whole life, but recently I’ve done more singing and choir — which extended into theatre. However, I’m planning on pursuing computer science in the future, so I do robotics as well.
What do these different interests each add to your life?
A lot of my life is very STEM-centric, and robotics has given me a platform to feed my interest in computer science and foster interest in engineering and physics. Maybe because I was raised in a household that values academics so much, getting to spend hours singing or doing theatre (or both) always feels hedonistic. They’re definitely my most cathartic activities, and they help a lot with stress throughout the school year.
我的生活主要以STEM(科学、技术、工程、数学)为主。
Does one, in any way, impact the other, or are they very separate uses of your energy?
When I’m doing one thing, I’m usually not thinking about another, which makes them fairly separate. They all draw from the same bank of energy, so when one is more active, that takes a little away from my other activities. Under normal circumstances, though, they do balance each other out really well in terms of whatever I need or want both academically and emotionally, and in that sense they all add to each other.
What do you think might be some benefits to being a multi-faceted person?
Honestly, most people I know are pretty multi-faceted — you’d be hard-pressed to find someone in high school who does only one thing and has decided everything they want to do in life. One great thing about this is that you are exposed to many different circles of people. Personally, that makes me feel a lot better integrated into this school. Like I mentioned before, varied interests also tend to balance each other out, and that keeps me from getting caught up in stress for schoolwork.
If you were limited, and could only do one, how do you think this would change you as a person?
This sounds counterintuitive, but I think I would be more stressed. At any given time, there is a plethora of things I could be worried about for each of my activities and classes, and I excel at overthinking when given the opportunity. Having a mostly full schedule keeps me from falling down that rabbit hole, forcing me to tackle my problems one at a time — I honestly have no idea how I would deal with suddenly freeing up a huge chunk of my time by choosing one, but it's probably something along the lines of an existential crisis.
