Art and business don’t intersect in everyday conversations, particularly at school, yet the two subjects often go hand in hand in the real world. Successful artists, like any business, must have a brand, capital, a business plan, and so on. How can young artists learn the valuable skills needed to succeed in the competitive worlds of art and business? Enter “Artrepreneurs”. Every year at Shanghai American School, the middle school art teachers on the Pudong campus give grade 8 students the opportunity to take charge of their artwork. The typical teacher-studentdynamic gives way, and our students to become business-minded creators.
Two students, the Artrepreneurs, are matched with one client from the faculty. The students are then tasked with designing a clay-based piece that meets the unique desires of their client. To accomplish this, the young artists hold interviews, craft design proposals, and provide timelines in a manner typically only seen in professional environments. Throughout the project, the Artrepreneurs are expected to keep in direct communication with their client, seeking to understand and honor their needs and wants.
In the past, the Artrepreneurs have produced pieces ranging from mugs to water-fountains to four-foot recreations of the Eiffel Tower! More valuable than the grades are the skills that students gain along the way. Artrepreneurs build creativity, communication, and teamwork, all of which are vital in the worlds of art and business. The project blends the students’ artistic vision with the input of their clients, and allows students to understand the business side of art.Watch for their work on display around our school, and in the future, around the world.
