We hear you have some varied interests that people wouldn’t normally think go together. Can you tell us about these?
"I am extremely passionate about math and the whole process of teaching math to others. I am currently taking IB HL Math and am genuinely excited by the challenges that I face in this course. Also, people have started to recognize me as a baker. I use a social media account to share some of the things that I bake, which everyone thought was very odd at first."
What do these different interests each add to your life?
"I spend a lot of time tutoring math to my friends and I enjoy participating in clubs that plan to spread the importance of math by appealing to students in an interesting way. Using my talents to help others is extremely valuable to me. For baking, I can spend my free time on those that I love, essentially. It is a way for me to express my love to those that I care about. During this process, I am able to be creative with the cakes and desserts, as I also learn about the science behind some of the baking processes. I honestly think it runs through the family, because my mom was a nutritionist and she is currently the best chef in the family, and my sister graduated Cornell University majoring in food science."
Does one, in any way, impact the other, or are they very separate uses of your energy?
"When I am busy with my math hobby (that sounds kind of nerdy) I do not get to bake as often because baking is a fun activity that should be done during my free time. I often give up on sleep to bake, because it is a way for me to relieve stress."
Do you ever feel pressure to choose between them and just haveonething you love? If so, where does that pressure come from?
"Many consider solving math problems related to school while baking is solely related to having fun. Despite this, I still manage to do both because they are both things I really enjoy."
What do you think might be some benefits to being a multi-faceted person?
"I am able to be viewed as someone with many interests rather than someone who is simply obsessed with one thing. I wouldn’t consider myself to simply be “a math person”, but rather a person who is passionate about several things, and that includes sharing her love to others by using her talents."
If you were limited, and could only do one, how do you think this would change you as a person?
"To me, baking was a factor that helped me change how others viewed me. I was known to be a cold person at school and had a hard time overcoming this. When I stumbled across baking in middle school, it allowed me to open up and show everyone that I do love a lot of people. If I didn’t start baking, I wouldn’t have been able to open up to more people and I would’ve stayed in my small bubble. I wouldn’t have been able to help and reach out, and I probably would’ve stayed the same Marie everyone thought I was in elementary school."
