After a long but busy winter break, Grade 9&10students are back to school for a new semester! But before we start anything new, we must have a reflection of what we accomplished in the last semester. So on Feb. 21 and Feb. 25, severalgroups of students from different PBL classes presented and explained the projects they conducted.
Mr, Liao Huiand Ms. Chen Lin, the supervisorsof PBL course gave a brief summary of last semester. Then some students of excellent projects were invited to give a presentation. Students improved a lot through one semester’s learning in PBL class and showed their achievements in various forms. Posters, videos, slideswere used for presentation and the speeches were really impressive. Many students said that their collaboration skills were also improved a lot over the last semester.From the presentation, we found that several of theprojectswere experiments, including the fruit battery experiment, extracting the DNA of bacteria, designing ananti-earthquake building, and creating glow-sticks! Many of the experiments required high tech tools and advanced procedures. This was especially true for the biology PBL. Jennyexplained the procedure of first checking soil for bacteria and then testing the bacteria for a certain disease. She had the privilege to experience extracting the DNA of the disease and showed color coded pictures of her results! It was all very impressive. Others were similar to research projects where students either tried to solve the issue of garbage atSHSIDor analyzing a way to measure the quality of tea leaves. Yes, Leo gave an entertaining speech about his journey on how to measure the quality of tea leaves and it was quite impressive. Others were more curriculum based, such as behavior economics. The students in behavior economics first learned a lesson and then created a project.
During the presentation, they showed some of their previous posters. There were very creative and artsy drawings! As you can see, we accomplished much in the last semester. Let’s hope we achieve even more in this semester!

2月21日和2月25日,所有九年级和十年级的学生分别利用PBL(Project-based learning)两节课的时间在先绵堂辅楼礼堂展示和分享了上学期PBL课程的成果与感想。
PBL是专门为了提高学生思考问题和解决问题的能力而开设的课程。与平时学科老师正常上课和布置作业的形式不同,PBL课程是在老师指引下主要由学生们自主的进行学习和探究并完成课题项目。通过这个成果展示,同学们可以了解到其他PBL课程的内容。
讲座的开始,由PBL总负责廖辉老师和陈琳老师对上学期的PBL开展情况作了总体介绍,随后他们邀请了部分优秀项目的制作学生展示了他们一学期的成果。经过一学期的学习,同学们的项目制作能力都得到大幅提高,成果展示形式多样、精彩纷呈。展板、视频、报告等各有特色,亮点频现。例如在Nina,Dora,和Maureen同学的关于电磁小制作的演讲里面,她们谈到了在整个学期里面,她们做的实验设计,学习到的知识,以及对于这门课程的想法。又例如在Henry同学的演讲里面他提到了如何利用数学的软件,结合自己的知识来制作各种各样有趣的图形。我们可以发现,PBL课程的选项不仅丰富有趣,更涉及到各个不同的学科。这对大家来说既是挑战也是机会。不少同学还表示,通过PBL的学习,团队合作能力也得到了很大的锻炼。
精彩的展示进一步激发了学生新学期的选课热情,大家都纷纷表示有很多感兴趣的课程想要尝试。不知道这个学期的PBL课程,他们又将会做出怎样的选择,将会创造出怎样的作品呢?就让我们一起拭目以待吧!
